Goldfinch Bonanaza

Yesterday the goldfinches were present by the gross. A conservative estimate would be around 500 birds. They were feeding on the Common Sunflowers and whatever the weed is below. Any idea what it is? They love the stuff and it must have just gone to seed because they were EVERYWHERE.

A few were patient enough to let me get some decent pictures. With so many birds around it wasn't too difficult to get a shot.

This little guy took flight just as I was closing the shutter.

KY Wildfires

On Wednesday there were three wildfires that were started in the counties surrounding Jefferson County. One was in Bullitt Co. and the other two were in Hardin Co., one of which was on Ft. Knox. The Ft. Knox fire was still burning yesterday and the winds were blowing it straight towards Louisville. The air was thick with smoke and the smell of wood, almost like a sauna. Usually I can see clear to the knobs of southern Indiana, but yesterday the visibility was so bad I could barely see the end of the runway at the airport.

It seems that the fire has been contained but smoke is expected to linger in some areas. This has been a tough year for Louisville weather wise. It was the hottest year on record by any measure and now the drought that is reaching severe levels in some parts of southern Indiana. All the heat, wind, and dry weather makes fires like this all but inevitable. It makes me sympathize with those out west and for the people of Moscow who had to deal with fires of epic proportion this summer. Here's hoping we get some rain.
